I wrote no words this month- for my WIP. What I did do, however, was work on my plot, backstory and world building. I decided to stop writing earlier this month because the plot was just not working and I couldn't continue on because my manuscript looked like a tried to tape up miscellaneous zombie parts together. I took a week or two off to focus on other things and then when I came back I knew what I had to do.
I started with fixing the main problem, my plot. I had changed it so many times but I realised that I only changed the ending and the middle, but I left the beginning untouched as I thought it was fine. I was wrong. Oh, so wrong. It was the beginning that messed everything up. I had to let go of ideas and the majority of what I have written to take the storyline an alternate route than it was before (but still good, if not better) . I found it hard to let go of those ideas I thought were so good for so many years. However, now that it is done and the new plot coming together I realise that certain things which didn't fit before now mesh together as if this was the muse's plan all along. It certainly felt inspired at the time.
The thing that makes me anxious but excited at the same time, is having to start writing everything again. Some of the stuff I've already written is reusable with minor (and major) tweaking, but its the thought of 66K this year going down the drain and the innumerable amount of words I got down in the year or two previous when I first began this story that has me stressed. Yet, despite this I am excited because it works so much better now and I can use a lot of what I wrote this year for future books in the series this single novel has turned out to be. I will cut down writing time in that regard.
Anyway, apart from fixing the plot, I have started putting together my encyclopedia properly. I had docs lying in my computer about characters backstories or a little bit about my countries, but they were not collated. I have just finished the history of my world and I am just about to start working on Magic and Religion. I am excited to do more on the locations scenes take place and to learn more about the culture of each country, their mannerisms and the way they go about their lives. It has been so beneficial so far and has helped me figure out books 3 and onwards (how ever many there end up being). I really can't wait to start doing the beastiary and the full character analysis in which I will do interviews with them and other things. I'll be sure to do a post on all that I have discovered regarding prep work soon in the Hocus Pocus section. However, if you are interested in learning more about what I am doing with my encyclopedia and how you can make one yourself click here.
What I still need to do (apart from finishing my encycolpedia) is do a full and detailed outline of my new plot from beginning to end. I know that it may take time because the last time I did a plot fix it took me over a week and I still didn't finish it. Despite this, I am remaining positive and I am happy because that last failure had taught me how to outline properly. I have a layout prepared so I can jump right in when I get there and I can still use much of my old plot to fill in the new one (to see the layout and how to make one of your own click here). However, for now, I will focus on one thing at a time.
Conversely, I have been feeling very lazy and have been catching up on way too much tv shows. I watched Gossip Girl for two nights in a row, which would make this time around the 7th time I've watched the entire series. It would make it the second time this year as well. That is how sad I am, haha. Anyway, I have stopped that now because I am determined to get to writing my novel again and as you can see I have my work cut out for me! I need to get cracking! I want to get it done by the end of October. You'll hold me to that, yes?
Anyway, in relation to the writing targets I set for myself last month I did not succeed in reaching my goal of 15,000 words. I stopped writing instead! Oh, well I have to do what is best for my novel. As such, my goal for October is to finish all prep work and set myself up to write my novel in November- which happens to be NaNoWriMo and exam time.....
I hope your novels are going well! Tell me about them in the comments below and share what your writing goals are this month.
