Well, October went super fast didn't it? I have no idea where it went and November is slipping away as I write this. I went through a lot of mixed emotions about my WIP during October and it wasn't all positive. I didn't achieve my goal to finish my encyclopaedia but I discovered something about my novel that makes me super excited!
- In my encyclopaedia so far I have completed:
- the background for the history of my world;
- I have done half of the history and background of magic;
- I have started on the geography of the lands; and
- have started theorising about the various plot various I have in store for my story.
I have discovered so much about my world in the last few weeks in writing my encyclopaedia and I have found it more than fascinating! I found out some solutions to plot holes but then unfortunately that epiphany was followed up with even more questions. However, the most important discovery is that my protagonist Killian has a secret. I did not know this before. Another is that my book has four plots in it. What? Four? Seriously, there are four! There is one main plot and there are three subplots that all interlace within the story which come together at the end. Its quite funny, for the longest time I couldn't quite figure out the ending of my book and now that has been fixed, the issue is now the beginning, as well as foreshadowing.
Here is my dilemma over the last week, I have been stressed as it is exam time for university and I have been pouring all my energy into my studies. I have still been working on my novel, but in small bites in my notebook but not on my encyclopaedia for the last two weeks. I have found that with each new discovery I have 50 new questions that must be answered. I have responded by having multiple paths my characters could take and I am unsure which they will choose. Unfortunately, that lead me to almost giving up my WIP. That has never happened before in the progress of writing this story. I had seriously considered quitting. However, I had some strong support from my Instagram friends who had helped me make the decision to keep going. They also helped me come to the conclusion (and realisation) that maybe I am not ready for this novel. Perhaps my skills are not ready for the task (in the nicest way possible) and I agree. This is the most complex novel I have ever written. I have given myself a deadline by the end of the year to come up with a solution to my WIP problems or give up writing it for now and start my next series, but I will continue to work on this one on the side. I am fine with this because I heard that Stephen King came up with the idea for Under the Dome years before he finished writing the novel. He had always wanted to finish the book but it was to complex for him at the time and so he put it on the back burner for a while. I think that if I decide to stop my novel it will always be in my mind and one day I will finish it. But that is a premature thought. I will soldier on for a little while longer.
I don't have time at the moment to give it my undivided attention but I vow to do this once uni is finished in a one week. Although, I will be working full time as of next week but I think that is fine. Working full time and writing is do-able as I will have my nights and weekends study free! Therefore, I proclaim that my goal for November is to finish my encyclopaedia and this time I will stick to the deadline. I will not lull myself into complacency with the thought that I still have next month. No, it will be like anything else with work or study. I must finish it or else. I will look to you to hold me to it!
