There is something I want to share with you, now that I have reached another milestone in my book! I am almost half way and it has transformed into something beyond my wildest dreams when I had that first dream and decided to write it down all those years ago. It weird to say, but I love being a writer and having a writers brain. I feel like a spell weaver, a philosopher, detective and murderer all at the same time. I love being able to create things from my own imagination. I mean, I cannot draw or paint or sculpt, despite wanting to have that skill desperately. For me, writing is something that is beyond me. By that I mean, I feel like the stories in my heart are beyond even my own humble imaginings. It is something that lives in side me, like it has a life of its own and when I type it out, my fingers just let my soul take over and it transcends beyond where I thought it would go.
However, this is why I love being a writer. It is being astounded at the story you are creating as it twists and turns, and –despite you being the author- still surprises you and makes you sit on the edge of your chair in suspense. Does that happen to you when you write? You will be sitting there, writing your story and then you stop as the electricity of an idea comes to your mind and your like wow, did that seriously just happen? Now, that took an unexpected turn. I love it when that happens, it makes me feel like the story is a living organism and we are merely the host giving it life.
I am amazed when this happens. That my brain could imagine something so wonderful, even if no one ever sees it. I feel when I get a burst of inspiration that my brain had it set up all along and that my consciousness was only now being brought up to speed.
I don’t think anyone would understand the joy it is to create living and breathing characters, and three dimensional worlds as much as another writer. It has its own method of appreciation, which is different from when a dancer masters their choreography or a sculptor finishes a piece. They are all labours of love, but being a writer is distinct. Each bring something to life, but writing creates realities where each reader can go and live. A place for people to retreat to, disappear in or lavish until the last page. It is a place they can visit whenever they want and meet with friends. A book is a place where you can actually live life.
Some people may wonder how authors get their ideas and I have had people stay to me staggeringly, ‘How do you come up with this stuff?’ However, I think it is the same as any other art form, for instance with musicians they can hear a note and come up with a song of complex harmonies. Well, for writers it is the same thing. We get an initial idea which is then worked on to develop sub-plots and underlying tension.
But, in the end we are doing something that comes to us naturally. I am not saying that writing is something that cannot be learnt, because it can be and the fact that there are so many great writing courses and schools out there means it is possible to pick up the craft later on in life. It is something that you can be good if you have the determination and passion. Yet, I think that is what separates it from other art forms, is because you can pick it up easily and there is no incorrect way to go about it. Whereas, it painting or sculpting I feel like it may take a long time to become good at it.
Either way, writing your story is something you should be proud of. Do not let anyone tell you your story is the same as anyone else’s. I can assure you that this is not true. Your writer’s brain is unique and if you don’t believe me I ask you do this simple test. Write down a three hundred word story and hand it to someone else, give them a quick overview but do not tell them the way you wish for the story to proceed and ask them to write another three hundred words about what happens next. You will see, that despite stemming out of the same idea and with the same characters, the stories take two completely different turns. You story is irreplaceable and so is your writers brain. Get out there are write, there are no rules. Do it your way and be proud of what amazing things you are achieving, even if no one ever reads it. You are magic.
