Let me introduce you to Lotus Vele, a lovely poet who is this weeks Poet of Instagram! Her poetry is so heartfelt and meaningful. She focuses her words on love and her reasons for doing so are truly heart warming. I hope that you will read her interview and view the gallery of her poetry!
Thank you so much for joining me for this interview. I am so excited to talk to you about your poetry and get to know you! Your peotry is so heartfelt, I connect to every word. My favourite poetry is about love and that is also the style I write myself.
Let us begin, please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Lotus Vele. I’m 52, widowed four years ago, three adult children and I have a sweet kitten. I live in the Northern California Valley, trying to deal with the drought. I used to drive for my city’s transit system, but I was injured on the job two years ago. Still dealing with health issues, so poetry has become one of my creative outlets.
A “fun-fact” about me: My hair touches the ground. I’m 5’5”.
When did you start creating poetry? Tell us a little about your journey. Did you start before your accident?
I played around with poetry around 2007, but I didn’t really get serious until I met my love. He is visually impaired (and will eventually become totally blind). He loves my art, but through the years (3 now), with his vision getting progressively worse, he’s not able to see my visual art. I decided, in 2013, that I would start writing “visuals” for him. Descriptive poetry. I have since evolved to favor a more structurally strict form of poetry, called haiku. I still occasionally do prose and alliteration, but I love haiku and tanka (which is an extended form of haiku).
That is very beautiful. I am sure he loves it. How would you describe your poetry?
I love to write about relationships. The good, as well as the bad. I also love to write about faith and spirituality.
Those are all very intimate things. What inspires your poetry?
Relationships. My own, as well as those around me. I even enjoy looking at photos of people and making up a story about them. Color, music (not the lyrics, just the sound), my faith.
How has poetry shaped your life and the way you see the world. Is this reflected in your work?
When I realized that people responded to my work in such a positive way, it showed me that there were people out there who were honestly interested in what I had to say. Being an introvert, I have a hard time being around a lot of people. I’m also a sensitive, so I feel way too much. I have created some pretty thick walls, that not many, can penetrate.. Poetry allows me to show my family and friends what kind of person I really am. Not the loner, “run-away-as-soon-as-possible” person I appear to be.
I love that and totally agree. It is such a beautiful mode of expression. Why did you start your Instagram account?
I call myself a Creative. I live my life creatively. I write, paint, doodle, sew, quilt, bead, cook, etc. I wanted to share my creative pursuits with family and friends. I then discovered IG communities, and I found my home! :)
That is wonderful. Why is sharing your poetry special to you?
I write of things I feel people can relate to. I also write to show who I am, because I am not normally an open person. It takes a lot to get through my personal walls. And, it’s my way to share my creativity with my love.
What do you want people to take from your poetry?
Hopefully, inspiration. And a sense that they are not alone in their struggles. I try to make most of my writing a positive experience, but I do have some dark moments.
What are the top three favourite poems you have written and why?
“Love?” Is my most difficult, but closest to my heart. I wrote it when I was at the lowest point in my marriage.
“He loved to make her laugh” is how I see my relationship now. <3
“Art is ev’rything” (haiku) is me!
I would love to, but I don’t know how to go about it. And at this time, with my injury and finances, I don’t see it happening anytime soon, but I’m hopeful!
What plans do you have for the future in terms of your poetry?
I really don’t have any plans. I write, because it’s like breathing now. I can’t not write.
Thank you again, I really enjoyed this interview. I feel like I have gotten to know you and I hope the readers feel this way as well. I wish you good luck and hope you achieve your dream of oubishing your work one day!

A simple soul
Who gives and takes
Accepts you as you are
A gentle soul
Who knew you'd go so far?
The caring soul
Just wants to help
In any way it can
The willing soul
Is crucial to your plan
The soul's attraction
Or merely just
Thirst for hurt
Made you truly dangerous
The soul cried out
It didn't know
It didn't understand
That's when your rage
And things got out of hand
The pleading soul
Just fans the flame
Your lust for hurt revives
The weakened soul
Thinks it's to blame
But this is how you thrive
To tear that soul to shreds
But dearest soul
You cannot wait
It won't stop 'til you're dead
Accepts the pain
Mistaken's it for love
The hopeless soul
This soul is like a dove
To your evil gods
The gods of Fear
You tell yourself
I love that soul"
You must confess
"I protect as best I can
So what, the soul
Gets punished some
It accepts me as I am
Besides, this soul
It needs to know who's boss
I can't allow the soul to leave
I couldn't take the loss"
Oh foolish one
Your fears have made
You break that sacred soul
What made you think
That LOVE was something
You thought you could control?
