I am constantly inspired by all the beautiful poets on Instagram, but one that particularly stands out to me is Maya Ahmed. Her work speaks to me because it is short and to the point yet so thickly layered with emotion. That is a skill that I wish to one day crystalize myself and Maya inspires me to do this with every post.
First of all, tell us a little about yourself!
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be part of this interview Shelly.
I'm aware that I'm a little well known on Instagram and other poetry community websites but I've always been a private person in real life. The answer of your question, I’m 26 years old... I'm half Malaysian and half Turkish woman. I grew up in a small family with a caring mother and beautiful brothers. I have finished my studies and currently I'm working at a bookstore.
When did you first start writing poetry?
To be honest, I started writing since I was 7 years old. I was the only kid that was writing instead of paying attention to the teacher. *chuckle*
Anyway, I always loved writing in anywhere and at any time.
Did you always want to be a poet?
Hmm, I never considered myself as a poet. I write what I feel. I used to write small notes, letters to the people around me and it turned to be poems.
The fact that I can vomit my emotions and feelings into paper and seeing the smile on my mother's face whenever she read a poem that I wrote for her.
Do you dabble in any other writing styles?
No, I actually started writing in English since 2009. As I said earlier, all my writing are based on true stories. I write from the core of my heart. I love the simplicity in everything and I'm sure those who have read my work would notice that I try to reach their souls.
How do you describe your poetry style?
A little emotional but full of love.
What inspires your words? I have read through all your poems and wow, something about them strikes a heart string. Your words are short but sweet, just beautiful.
I thank you for your encouragement words dear. Well, the people around me. Anything and almost everything in my life inspires me to write. I just love writing. It's my air.
What do you think makes a poet?
I seriously don't know the perfect answer of this question but in my humble opinion, I think every mind or a heart observer can be a poet.
Do you think it is something people are born to do?
Maybe there are people who were born to be a poet or maybe there are others who life experiences and struggles made them a poet.
I seriously love Sylvia Plath. I love her style in writing. I've always been a huge fan of her writing. Her words inspires me! Aside from the music, her words helped me to be a better writer.
I was just wondering what made you post your poetry up on Instagram?
Sharing your innermost thoughts with people is an incredibly personal thing to do.
You're right. Well, one of my good friends who they also are a poet made me join on Instagram to share my thoughts, she is one of my favorite writer and she is a wonderful friend of mine. It was difficult for me to open and share my thoughts with my past friends let alone posting my own writing to the world but I was inspired by so many writers in the past and I said to myself why not sharing a piece of my soul to the world. To me it's like a little gesture or warm knocks to the souls of my readers telling them whispers of my being. I hope I inspired anyone who have read my work.
Which poem of yours is your favorite or best describes you?
"I am an extraordinary woman
who loves and dream,
meditate to live
listen to drown,
And always dance to the tendon
of my heart's words. "
"I walk barefoot on the thorns of pain in order to bleed ink of hope"
What comes next for you?
I'd love to practice my writing as a career but I still don't know what the future holds for me.”
Where do you think your poetry is going?
I seriously don't know. I'll keep going on to write the echo of the voices inside my heart until I die.
Many people are making books out of them, do you think you would ever do that?
Of course. I would love to write my own book in the future. It was a long awaited dream.
I hope you all enjoyed my interview with Maya! She is so talented and she deserves all your attention.
